John Galloway

From an early age John possessed a deep passion for animals—especially dogs—and spent his childhood pocket money buying T.F.H. breed books from the local pet shop City Pets. Growing up alongside Jack Russells, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and a rescue Border Collie (not all the same time, thankfully!) he welcomed his first personal dog at age 14: a Yorkshire Terrier named Scamp. Through daily morning training sessions with Scamp, John built the foundation of a lifelong pursuit, quickly becoming the go-to person among family and friends for dog-related advice.

Although he originally dreamed of working with animals, John initially pursued a career in catering, enrolling at Colquitt Street College, Liverpool in the early 2000s. After earning his NVQ Level 3 in Catering and Hospitality, he worked in catering management for several years. However, his passion for dogs ultimately won out, leading him to leave the hospitality industry in late 2009.

In 2010, John became a self-employed dog runner a service tailored to high-energy breeds, expanding his services using a PawTrekker scooter, purchased from SnowPaws store, to exercise his clients' dogs. As his business evolved, he introduced dog walking and eventually transitioned into full-time dog walking under the trade name JMG Dog Walking Service. Over the years, he worked with a wide range of breeds, including Weimaraners, German shepherds, Staffordshire bull terriers, New Zealand Huntaways, shih Tzu, Bichon Frisé and a Chinese Crested named Beanie. Frequently volunteering his spare time to train client dogs free of charge and help with behavioral issues. One notable success involved rehabilitating and house-training an energetic young German Shepherd named Molly, helping her integrate safely into her owners' home.

John would take Molly home with him and learn her how to behave in a home environment. He trained Molly in obedience and to help her socialise to other dogs and people he took her to the local Merseyside Boxer dog club at St Mary's church Millennium centre. The club was open to all breeds, actually very few boxer dogs were in attendance, mostly English bulldogs and Frenchies.

To deepen his expertise, John pursued rigorous study in wolf ethology, and stray/feral dog behavior alongside a wide range of dog training literature and media. Rudolph Shenkel, David Mech. Angela White, Colin Tennant, Bruce Fogle, John Fisher, Cesar Milan, Barbra Sykes, Michael Tucker. DVDs from Pets on Film - Canine separation anxiety, Toilet training, Obsessive compulsive behaviour, Dog aggression to people, Canine origins the wolf in your dog, 21 days to train your dog, Breaking bad habits in dogs.

In 2012 John joined Jennie Watson’s Academy of Dog Training and Behaviour. Passed the six written assessments marked by Jennie, produced evidence of work experience and provided two references from dog walking clients whose dogs John had trained to become an ADTB approved Instructor.

Also studying a DCA home learning Dog Behaviour course, picked up a Guild of Dog Trainers level 2 Dog Training Theory certificate, Narps UK Running a Pet Business certificate, Action Response Training first aid certificates and a more in-depth online Animal Jobs direct level 3 Animal first aid certificate. Became a member of the National Register of dog trainers and behaviourists.

With strong encouragement from his clients, John established Poise Dog Training in 2019. Unfortunately soon after in 2020 a change in family circumstances meant John could only work part time hours, also putting restrictions on the distance John could travel for work. He has however still managed to build a good reputation and a decent online presence. In the future John still intends to work full time as a dog trainer and continue studying and adding to his knowledge. John is currently studying Canine husbandry with K9 - 1.

John lives with his 11 year old Brown & White Border Collie Holly.
